The Stories We Need to Tell: Therapeutic Writing Tools for Healing & Transformation
Our narratives matter; they define who we are. For this reason, stories are invaluable tools for counselors, therapists, and educators to use in their work with clients, students, and groups. Based on work with thousands of students, writers, veterans suffering from PTSD, and cancer patients at Mayo Clinic, this 3-hour workshop will feature inspiring stories that demonstrate five effective ways that personal stories and writing can be used in clinical treatment to support healing and growth. Participants will be able to identify three significant findings from recent neuroscience that explain how writing our positive stories can lead to creating healthier, happier, and more resilient identities. The speakers will demonstrate how to use two or more writing/storytelling activities from the book The Story You Need to Tell, and participants will learn interactively to apply these activities while creating their own plans to integrate them into treatment and/or education with individuals and groups of any age or ability. No previous experience with writing or storytelling is required. Eligible for 3.0 Clock/Credit Hours: NBCC, ATCB; NASW, MFT; APA, CPA; SWNYS, LMHC, LCAT (New York state only)
